How to Measure your Cat for Clothing

You can't make clothes for your cat if you don't know some standard measurements, nor where to start. If you have some experience with dog clothing, then you are already a step ahead, taking cat measures is very similar to taking dog measures. If you dont know anything, nor what size is your cat, you can start over here. You will need a measuring tape, paper, and a pencil to take notes.

Now, measure cats is not easy thing, unless your cat is kind of lazy and just wants to be laying on any surface all day, and even like that is very difficult; to take measures, your cat needs to stand up in his/her four paws, or you won't get accurate measurements, my personal advice, is to wait a moment when the cat is calm, or when its looking something on the wall, its tricky, but i'm sure you'll figure out how, every cat is different.

Take your cat's measurements:

TORSO:
Is the size of your cat torso, at the widest point, generally, the widest point is right behind de front legs, but is better if you use the thickest part of the body, especially if you have a little fur ball (yes, I mean fat cats).
Wrap the measuring tape around the cat's rib cage (or the thickest part as we said) and on paper, write down the number you got as "Torso".

NECK:
This measurement is taken around the cats neck, take a look at your cat, it's usually where their collar would naturally sit (neither too tight nor too loose). Wrap the measuring tape around the neck, and measure the circumference. now, on paper write down the number you got as "Neck".

BACK:
You take this measurement from the base of the neck (where you took the neck measurement) to the base/start/beginning of the tail (not the tip, just no, not the tip). On the paper, you write down the number you got as "Back".

CHEST:

This one is optional, in fact, this is especially if you have a little fur ball (yes, fat cats).
You take this measurement from the base of the neck (at the front) to the beginning /at the front of the legs.

And there you have it, now you have all the basic measurements of your cat.

WELCOME!

Hello! and welcome, my name is Michelle, and that one up there is Lily. I started making dog clothing before I adopted my cat, the reasons why I started with dog clothing is non important, but I can tell you it opened my life to a new world of creating.

After I adopted my cat, I tried to use the dogs clothing patterns to make her some dresses and other little things, but unfortunately, as she grew up, and got bigger, the clothes I made for her, did not fit the right way, she felt and look very uncomfortable, this in fact, is because cats bodies are very, VERY different from dogs bodies, unlike many had made everyone believe, dog clothes DO NOT work well for cats, cats chests are not as big as dogs chests, their backs are longer than dogs backs, and their feet are not the same way.
That's how I started to make some research, but everytime I looked for cat clothes patterns, there were only dog clothes patterns, with the person who offered them saying "yeah, you can use it on your cat", but as I said, this is not true, so I started another research, since there was no cat clothes patterns, I would make my own, so I looked up the cats skeletons, and body forms, and since I had my pretty and adorable model, I started to take measures, i started to draw, to cut, to sew, to adjust, all that, until I finally got a pattern specially made for cat clothes, I found a pattern to create clothes that fitted perfectly on my cat.

Here is the thing, I thought to myself, hey, maybe there are other people just like me, people who wants to dress their cats, and have found the same problem I did, cats look and feel very uncomfortable with dog clothes. That's how I decided to share the patterns with others, other cat people who felt just like me.

So I decided to make this my job, to create clothes patterns specially made for cats.

If you are here just for looking and curiosity, thanks, because it means I reached somebody.

If you decide to support my job, I would be more than thankful.

Thats it, thats my story.

 Thanks again and happy sewing!
